Some (many?) PMs can have an ego given their position in the org and the authority they tend to have. My two cents: there are factors that exist that can easily lead to dislike between PM ENG.

Part marketer, part engineer, part sales, and part project manager, the product manager needs to understand the business, marketplace and customer to make sure they come together to form an amazing product. It encompasses understanding what to build, why to build it, and how to position it. So it makes sense that a lot of people would want to go into it.Product Management is the art and science of building the right product for the right people. Įngineering stacks up very well against most fields in 3 out of 4 metrics. The interest of the field is dependent on the person. Fast food might be an easier job to get but no one wants to make a career at flipping burgers. Almost anyone who wants to be an engineer can be, save for a few that are in low demand right now like Civil. 
On accessibility engineering might be the easiest “career” there is. On stress level/work hours, none of those things that pay more will rank better than engineering. On pay, you’ve only got a few things ahead of engineering. I think most people would put pay at the top though. I’d say I’d evaluate it in that order but others might have a different order.
In choosing a career, what would be considered would mostly be:Īccessibility of the career path (how easy is it to get into the field) Are that many people really just so passionate about engineering? Yeah and of course I get the money aspect, but there’s more to making a career choice than just money.
